In the northern hemisphere, always look north. The aurora appears on the northern horizon first and rises higher as activity intensifies. Get away from city lights, find an open northern horizon — a field, lakeshore, or hilltop with no obstructions.

Modern phones (iPhone 15+, Pixel 7+) can capture aurora in night mode. Set exposure to 3–10 seconds, stabilize your phone (tripod or rest it on something), and keep ISO below 3200 to reduce noise. The camera often captures colors the naked eye misses — especially when activity is low.

A bright (full or gibbous) moon illuminates the sky the same way city lights do, washing out the subtle greens and purples of a moderate aurora. A new moon and dark skies are ideal. A full moon doesn't prevent seeing a Kp 8+ event, but it completely kills Kp 3–4 displays.
